Zwaarden, paarden en ziektekiemen: de ongelijkheid in de wereld verklaard

This is what happens when you take an intelligent person, and casually make a few mentions of a field of study they have no knowledge of.Mr. Diamond, NOT an anthropologist, takes Marvin Harris theory of cultural materialism and uses it to explain everything in life, history, and the current state of the world.Materialism is a way of looking at human culture which, for lack of a better way to explain it easily here, says that peoples material needs and goods determine behavior and culture.

For instance Jews stopped eating pigs because it became so costly to feed pigs they themselves were starving. On the surface, materialism seems very logical.

Like any theory it has to be at least somewhat probable sounding, and since people are used to thinking of life, these days, in terms of materialistic values already, Harris theory sounds logical and likely very often. But like every other time you attempt to explain everything that ever happened in the history of man with one theory, this falls desperately short of reality.

Materialism is likely ONLY when coupled, sensibly, with other theories and, need I say it, actual PROOF, of which Diamond has little. As an exercise in materialist theory this book is magnificent. I would recommend this book ONLY to people in Anthropology with a great understanding of theory, less educated or unwarned people might think this book is fact rather than an exercise in speculation.

As an explanation of why the world is the way it is, it is an utter and complete failure.

A Cold Light

A Cold Light is a luminosity that cannot ignite, nor can it generate any heat:-Ivy is the wife of the Chief Electrical engineer at a colliery in the late 1940s, she falls for one of her husband’s younger electricians, later, during a mine disaster ,which leaves both men trapped in separate underground sections; she has to decide which one to have rescued first.

knowing that the second group may die of gas poisoning. Based in a East Midlands mining area, this story is based on a real mine. and real people with changed names.

Human Wishes / Enemy Combatant

The novel is comical (and I think laugh-out-loud funny) in many places as it protrays the everyday angst of someone who knows he does not belong in America. The hero has disappointments and epiphanies as he researches people who live at rest-stops, visits an installation of Joseph Cornells boxes at the Salem art museum, and finds the lost Beckett play Human Wishes under the floorboards in a Parisian tenement. You former Bostonians will recognize the locals where the hero encounters the contradictions of American consumer society.

Feeling alienated from modern consumerism while ostensibly trying to buy pants in the Watertown Arsenal Mall, the hero is reminded that the mall was formerly the factory where Frederick Winslow Talyer conducted his infamous time-and-motion studies of workers movements. These studies were the prerequisite for de-skilling craft work, culminating in the modern assembly line.

But there are also overseas settings -- Paris, St. Petersberg, Guantanamo, and Palestine. Although the chapters together tell a story overall, they can be be read sparately so skip around if you feel like it. My favorite chapter is a look back in time, depicting the heros 14 year old mother fleeing Lydda on the Lydda death march during the Palistinian Nakba of 1948.

Edmond based this section of the book on historical documents (as he did also in the time-and-motion chapter just mentioned). Let me urge you to consider buying Edmonds book from the small press which took the courageous step of publishing this experimental novel. The publisher gives his own overview of what the book is about, check it out:http://sayitwithstones.com/?page_id=472
